Why Ethiopia?

This is a video I found that another family created for their adoption. It's really neat and since I haven't said much about why we chose Ethiopia I wanted to share. It pretty much says it all!

OUR TIMELINE

11/16/10, Feeling God leading us to adopt - Praying
12/7/10, Filled out the online application with AWAA
12/17/10, Our application was approved by AWAA for the Ethiopia program!
12/21/10, Mailed our signed agreement and initial payment to AWAA
12/29/10, Got assighned a family coordinator
1/6/11, Contacted by our Social Worker and set up first meeting
1/10/11, Sent in our payment for our home study and post placement reports
1/13/11 & 1/14/11, Physical Exams
1/15/11, Our first set of fingerprints
1/18/11, First Home Study Meeting at Panera Bread
1/28/11, Both of our individual Home Study meetings at Panera
2/2/11, Last Home Study meeting at our house
2/14/11, Recieved the draft of our home study
2/18/11, Final draft of our home study came in the mail
2/22/11, Overnighted our I-600A
3/11/11, Recieved our fingerprint appointments in the mail
3/15/11, FBI Fingerprints
3/18/11, Got papers certified
4/22/11, Received our I-171 form
4/25/11, Mailed our Dossier to our agency
4/29/11, Dossier to Ethiopia (DTE) Date!!!
5/4/11, Dossier arrived in Ethiopia

WHY ETHIOPIA?

There are 4.6 million orphans in Ethiopia
1 out of 9 children is an orphan
1 in 10 children will die before their 1st birthday
1 in 6 children will die before age 5
Malnutrition is the underlying cause of more then half of all child deaths
4 out of 5 families live on less then $2 a day
Only 50% of children attend primary school (K-3)
Average class size in government school is 85-100
44% of the population is under age 15
1 in 4 women die in childbith or pregnancy related illness
Only 5% of births are attended by a doctor
There is 1 doctor for every 48,000 people
1 in every 6 people either has AIDS or is HIV positive
15% of orphans are orphaned because of AIDS
